Veena is a large plucked string instrument used in Carnatic classical music. The Veena is named after Bobbili, where it was invented. The making of the Veena started in the 17th century during the reign of Pedda Rayudu in Bobbili of Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh. In Bobbili kingdom, the Veenas were supplied by the craftsmenof Sarwasiddi community. The craftsmen community who make this musical instrument are known as "Bobbili Veena Sampradayam" (Bobbili Veena community). It has earned the GI tag in the year 2012.
