Paper Mache
Paper Mache is a technique which is used widely for creating attractive figures or mask-like structures of gods, men and women. The word Paper Mache literally means either chewed or chopped paper. The process of preparation also involves glue, Clay, starch or other chemical agents. These are used for increasing the plasticity and strength.
It is believed that Paper Mache first came into India from Iran to Kashmir, where world-famous trays, boxes, lamps book covers, pen cases and toys mirror cases, flower vases, and exquisite samovars are created and then intricately painted over. Paper Mache is also being practised extensively these days in other states of India for making local festival toys and other handicraft items of high quality. The products of Paper-Mache are completely eco-friendly since these are made mostly with old recycled newspapers and then processed manually. The popular items which are also created using Paper Mache are coaster sets, pen stands, photo frames, pen stands, eggs, pencil holders, letter racks, boxes of various sizes, lamp stands, and Christmas tree hangings etc. In Andhra Pradesh, craftsmen add attractive colours for these products, displayed at Lepakshi emporiums. These depict the local culture of the rural folk in the state and are bought by art lovers extensively.
